HOW TO PREPARE

A PERFECT

MATCHA

Measuring Matcha Powder for Its Preparation

Making a cup of matcha is more than just a simple tea preparation; it's an art that elevates the senses and nourishes the soul. Whether you're a seasoned matcha enthusiast or a curious beginner, mastering the art of making matcha will unlock the full potential of this vibrant green elixir.

STEP 1

Before diving into the preparation, ensure you have the essential tools for a flawless matcha experience. You'll need a kettle for boiling water, a traditional matcha bowl (chawan), a bamboo matcha whisk (chasen), a bamboo scoop (chashaku), a fine mesh sieve and of course, high-quality matcha powder. Additionally, if you have a matcha choko (a small traditional cup), you can use it to measure and serve your matcha. These tools will ensure the perfect blend and frothy texture of your matcha.

STEP 2

Using your kettle*, boil fresh, filtered water to about 175°F (80°C) - just below boiling point. This temperature is crucial for extracting the best flavors from matcha without scalding it.

  • If you're in search of a dependable kettle that allows you to control the temperature for the ideal matcha preparation, I recommend the Russell Hobbs brand, which you can find on Amazon.

Boil Fresh Water

STEP 3

To enhance the flavors and aromas, pre-warm your matcha bowl by rinsing it with hot water. Gently pat it dry to maintain the ideal temperature for your matcha.

Warm Your Matcha Bowl

STEP 4

Using the bamboo scoop, measure the appropriate amount of matcha powder and place it into your warm matcha bowl. Generally, one scoop of matcha (about 1 gram) is suitable for a single serving. To avoid clumps in your matcha, place a fine mesh sieve over the bowl and gently sift the matcha powder through it.

Hold the matcha whisk with one hand and use quick, zigzag motions to whisk the matcha and water together. Focus on creating a smooth and creamy texture, ensuring there are no clumps in the mixture.

STEP 7

Continue whisking until a fine layer of froth forms on the surface of your matcha. This frothiness is a sign of a well-prepared matcha.

Embrace the Froth

STEP 8

Your matcha is now ready to be savored. Pour it from the matcha bowl into the matcha cup (choko), and take a moment to appreciate its vibrant green color and the delicate aroma. The taste should be smooth, rich, and slightly sweet, with a subtle vegetal note.
